Framing selection and its consequential thermal bridging effect is now a critical design decision within the NCC 2019 – Vol 1. Until, recently, they have been mostly ignored as they have not been a requirement for most projects.
The requirements within NZS 4214:2006 - Methods of Determining the Total Thermal Resistance of Parts of Buildings introduce the requirement for thermal bridging assessments, as a secondary reference within AS/NZS 4859.2:2018 - Thermal insulation materials for buildings.
The Speckel approach to framing is to get users going through templates that are quick and convenient to select, and very close to what suppliers will provide to you. Simply select the insulation layer of your Wall System, and you can choose and edit the closest framing solution for your Design.
Step 1 – Let’s first reuse the Lightweight Cladding (Cavity fixed to 92mm steel frame) Wall System we created in Wall Systems Tutorial 1 – Getting Started.
Step 2 – Adjusting Wal System framing elements could not be easier. Simply navigate the material layers and select the insulation layer. Here you will find access to different framing options under Edit Framing, that enables you to change the properties of your wall in line with NZS 4214:2006 calculation requirements.
Step 3 – If you would like to change the framing options entirely, simply click on the frame name and you will be provided with generic framing options.
Step 4 - When your happy, simply click Performance Solution and download your Report.
